“Cookies are intended to facilitate access and delivery of services used by the internet user, such as personalization of certain settings (language, country, prices displayed in national currency, etc.).

“Cookies, based on the anonymous information they collect about users, help website owners to streamline their product so that it is as user-friendly as possible. They also increase the efficiency of online activity and, last but not least, they can allow multimedia or other applications from other sites to be embedded on a given site to make browsing more useful.

What is a cookie?

A cookie (“browser cookie” or “HTTP cookie”) is a small file made up of letters and numbers that is stored on any terminal with internet access (computer, mobile phone, tablet, etc.) and is installed by a request from a web-server to a browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.).

Note: “Cookies” do not contain any software programs, viruses or spyware and cannot access information on the user’s storage drive. Cookies do not ask for personal information and do not personally identify internet users.

A cookie consists of a name and content, its lifetime is determined, and it can be accessed again by the web-server when a user returns to the site associated with that web-server.

Cookies are classified into:

– Session cookies – these are temporarily stored in the browser history which memorizes them until the moment the user exits the website or closes the browser window.

– Persistent Cookies – These are stored, according to a predetermined duration, on the hard-drive of a computer or equipment. Persistent cookies also include those placed by a website other than the one the user is currently visiting – known as “third party cookies” or “third party cookies” – which can be used anonymously to remember a user’s interests so that advertising can be delivered that is as relevant as possible to users.

What are the advantages of cookies?

A cookie contains information that links users to a website. If a browser accesses that web-server again, it can read the information already stored and react accordingly. Cookies provide users with a pleasant browsing experience and support the efforts of many sites to provide user-friendly services: e.g. online privacy preferences, site language choices, other preferences or options, or relevant advertising.

What is the lifetime of a cookie?

The lifetime of a cookie can be different, depending on the purpose for which it is placed. There are cookies used exclusively for a single session – they are not retained after the user leaves the site. Persistent cookies – are retained and reused each time the user returns to that site, but can be deleted at any time by the user.

What are third-party cookies?

Certain pieces of content on certain websites may be placed on the website accessed by third parties through banners, boxes or links – and all of these tools may contain cookies. They are called “third party cookies” or “third party cookies” because they are not placed by the visited site and the third party providers are subject to the applicable laws and privacy policies of the third party site owner.

Disabling and refusing cookies

You can set your browser to stop accepting cookies, or you can set your browser to accept cookies from a particular site.

All modern browsers offer the possibility to change cookie settings. These settings are usually found in the ‘options’ or ‘preferences’ menu of your browser.
